Rev. Theodore M. Hesburgh, C.S.C

mcob_spring_2015_fr

Theodore Martin Hesburgh, Fr. Ted as he is lovingly monikered, was born May 25, 1917, in Syracuse, New York. By age six he had received his calling in life and wanted to become a priest. In 1943, he was ordained a priest of the Congregation of Holy Cross at Sacred Heart Church at The University of Notre Dame. Throughout his life Fr. Ted had a fascination for aviation as well. Years later, Father Ted’s calling and his love of aviation intersected, providing him with the opportunity to be a passenger on an Air Force jet that matched the speed of a bullet.

Considered one of the most influential figures in higher education of the 20th century, Rev. Theodore M. Hesburgh, C.S.C., was invited to deliver commencement addresses around the world. According to Guinness World Records, Father Hesburgh has garnered more honorary degrees than any other person being recognized with 150 from 1954 to 2002. He served popes and U.S. presidents; directed the boards of banks, foundations, and international commissions; and worked globally for peace and justice. Father Ted’s response to his extraordinary life of leadership and service were from his calling to become a Catholic priest.

This February 26 th marks the one-year anniversary of the passing of Father Theodore M. Hesburgh, C.S.C,.
