The Fighting Irish Prepare for 2015
On March 18th, the Notre Dame Football team tossed on their jerseys for their first spring practice of 2015. As the Irish took the field in Loftus Sports Complex at Notre Dame, they were joined by a number of new coaches including Autry Denson (Running Backs), Mike Sanford (Defensive Coordinator & Quarterbacks), Todd Lyght (Defensive Backs), Ketih Gilmore (Defensive Line). And while new coaches brought a new energy and tempo to the first practice, this was not the only excitement on day one.
On the offensive side of the ball, everyone is watching the battle for the starting Quarterback job. Although Everett Golson nabbed the first reps on the first day of practice, Malik Zaire remains a qualified candidate for the position. Both athletes are exemplifying the qualities of Notre Dame’s starting quarterback. Golson is noted for his accuracy, putting the football right where he wants it, regardless of distance. Zaire displays composure under pressure in the pocket and incredible athleticism when running the ball. The level competition between these two athletes will make this battle one to watch throughout the entire spring season.
On the defensive side of the ball, early-enrollee Jerry Tillery is turning heads. Already demonstrating his ability to use his hands to push through offensive linemen, Tillery will be one for Irish fans to watch over the course of the next several weeks and in the Blue-Gold game. Also on defense, cornerback Nick Watkins is grabbing some attention for his mental and physical speed.
Overall the entire Fighting Irish Football team is demonstrating great energy and excitement for the 2015 season, and they look forward to showing fans some off-season gains in the 2015 Blue-Gold game, which will be televised live on Saturday, April 18 at 12:30 p.m. ET on NBCSN.
