Blessed Franz Jägerstätter (1907-1943): Farmer, Conscientious Objector, and Martyr

Robert A. Krieg, Professor, Systematic Theology, University of Notre Dame

Refusing induction into Hitler’s army on March 3, 1943, Franz Jägerstätter was immediately imprisoned and, after military hearings, was beheaded on August 9, 1943. In 2007, he was beatified by Pope Benedict XVI in Linz, Austria. Franziska Jägerstätter with her daughters participated in her husband’s beatification.
