In Pursuit of a Treatment for Niemann-Pick Type C Disease
Paul Helquist, Professor of Chemistry and Biochemistry
Olaf Wiest, Professor of Chemistry and Biochemistry

Niemann-Pick type C disease (NPC) is a rare, inherited disease that typically strikes young children and is 100% fatal. Included among the victims have been three of Coach Ara Parseghian’s grandchildren. Driven by the absence of an effective treatment for this disease, Chemistry Professors Olaf Wiest and Paul Helquist have formed a multidisciplinary team of collaborating researchers at several universities and medical schools to find a treatment. Recent results have shown sufficient promise to attract cooperate partners into this quest.
